Ethanol may not be the solution

4 05 2008

Some people think that ethanol could be a solution to rising gas prices but in truth it takes a lot of energy, possibly gas energy, to make and ship ethanol.  you need to till fields to grow corn, most farmers use machines, and turning that corn into ethanol takes energy, and ethanol degrades so it can’t be shipped through pipelines.  That means that trucks, which need energy, need to transport the ethanol to the pumps.  So if you agree or disagree that ethanol is a solution, please comment.

I’m not sure which solution is better – ethanol or electric – but I do believe we have to work real hard on a new solution. One of the big problems with suburban areas like ours is the need for cars to get to work, school, etc. People in cities have it better from the standpoint that walking/biking/public transportation is an easier option.
